The group of seniors could not stop smiling. At 8:30 pm Tuesday night, Melanie Edmond, Brenna Keen, Chanelle Hammond, Alicyn Kehoe, Hallie Price, and Lexi Passaeur didn’t want to leave the track facility. They were witnesses to a moment that was a long time in the making. “I’ve waited my whole four years for this,” Hammond said. “I remember a couple of years ago when the bus ride home was silent.”
For the first time since 2013, the Lady Bearcats were crowned Greater South Shore conference champions. Despite the pole vault still not being contested yet, the Bearcats next closest opponent could not make up the gap. At press time, the Bearcats were up 39 points on their rivals Hanover.
Getting lost in the moment, Senior Melanie Edmond simply said, “We did it!” while embracing her sprint coach Chip Lee.
“When any of these girls come back, there will be a plaque hanging in the halls of Wheeler High School forever reminding them of what they did,” Head Coach Dennis Bunda said. “It was a collective team effort and I’m proud of all of our coaches and our kids.”
The Lady Bearcats had contributions from everywhere in a dominating effort.
