St. Patrick’s Day weekend brought a little luck of the Irish for the Wheeler track team at their Portage Field Event Qualifier. No running events were held and only field events were contested including long jump, high jump, pole vault, and shot put.
The Bearcats started off with a 1st place in high jump led by Junior Thad Martz with a jump of 6 feet 4 inches. He was followed closely by his teammate Bryce Catherman who took 3rd in the event at 6 feet. Bryce was not done yet as he was the champion of the long jump with a leap of 20 feet 6 inches. Freshman Jake Passaeur placed 15th with a jump of 17 feet 7 inches, while Sophomore Anthony Cawby was 18th at 17 feet 3 inches. “We just gotta keep swinging.” Head Jumps Coach Dennis Bunda said.

In the throws, Jesse Smith threw a personal best 43 feet 11 inches in placing 7th with some of NWI’s best. A young group of throwers followed with senior Dane Simatovich (37’9″), freshman Blaise Evensen (32’11”), and freshman Billy Haak (33’10”) respectively. “I’m very proud of all my throwers today, ” Coach Mario Baez said, “especially Jesse, who got to throw with the best guys in Northern Indiana today.”

The Bearcat boys await their fate next week to see who qualifies for the Indoor State Finals in Bloomington.
